Marine energy, also known as ocean energy, offers coastal countries significant diversification potential for their electricity mixes. Competition in the European sector is rife with companies trying to outdo each other and impose their marine turbine or wave energy converter concepts for mass production. The tidal stream sector, which uses ocean current energy, has opened up a slight lead by launching its first commercial projects to benefit from power purchase agreements. It is currently collecting feedback on its full-scale prototypes, i.e., MW “commercial” size turbines. The wave energy converter (WEC) sector is hard on its heels, testing prototypes dimensioned at several hundred kW adapted to deal with differing European coastal wave conditions.

249,2 MW Projets utilisant les énergies marines ayant été en activité durant l’année 2021 dans l’UE à 27
Les énergies marines, également appelées énergies océaniques, représentent un potentiel de diversification non négligeable des mix électriques des pays disposant d’une façade maritime. La filière européenne est en pleine émulation avec des entreprises rivalisant d’ingéniosité pour imposer leur concept de turbine hydrolienne ou de houlomoteur en vue d’une production en série. La filière hydrolienne, utilisant l’énergie des courants marins, dispose d’un petit temps d’avance avec le déclenchement des premiers projets commerciaux associés à des contrats d’achat de l’électricité. Elle se situe dans une phase de retour d’expériences de prototypes à l’échelle 1, c’est-à-dire des turbines de tailles “commerciales” de la classe du mégawatt. La filière houlomotrice suit de près et teste également des prototypes de plusieurs centaines de kilowatts adaptés aux différentes conditions de houle des côtes européennes.

The ocean energy sector has been a beehive of activity over the last three years with many prototypes being submerged off the British, Brittany, North Sea and Mediterranean coastlines. Tidal stream energy leads wave energy conversion and the other technologies in this ocean race. This is the first time that the sector has been specifically monitored for a regular EurObserv’ER theme-based barometer.

Baromètre énergies marines 2019243,4 MW La puissance énergies marines officiellement recensée dans l’UE fin 2018
La filière des énergies marines est en pleine effervescence avec un nombre significatif de prototypes immergés ces trois dernières années, que ce soit au large des côtes britanniques ou de la Bretagne, en mer du Nord ou en mer Méditerranée. Dans cette course à l’océan, l’énergie des courants a un temps d’avance sur l’énergie des vagues et les autres technologies. Cette filière fait pour la première fois l’objet d’un suivi thématique dans le cadre des baromètres EurObser’ER.
